September ended on a sour note Friday, and October hasn’t been much better. Nevertheless, in the 15-win month, the Mets had a couple of solid performances from Eduardo Escobar and Max Scherzer.

Hitter of the Month

Whatever misfortunes Eduardo Escobar had through the first five months of the season, the 33-year-old flipped the script of his season in September.

Across the month, Escobar had 13 extra-base hits (eight homers, four doubles, and a triple), knocked in 16 runs, was nearly two times better than the league average (191 wRC+) and capped the month with a walk-off hit, which sealed a win in a game in which Esco knocked in all five Mets runs.

He even earned National League Player of the Month, which means he had to win MMO’s, too. Here’s to hoping his bat carries over to the playoffs.

Pitcher of the Month

Despite a stint on the 15-day injured list in the middle of the month, Max Scherzer was the Mets’ best pitcher in September.

Over three starts and 17 innings, Scherzer allowed two runs, struck out 21 batters and walked just two. Though he left his first start of the month after five innings, the 38-year-old returned from oblique tightness with six perfect innings against the Milwaukee Brewers. Six days later, he returned to the mound to strike out seven Oakland A’s and allow just a single run off a Seth Brown homer.

Across the whole month, he had a 1.06 ERA ( FIP), 0.56 WHIP and the 200th win of his career.

Though he had a rough start to October, Scherzer will anchor the Mets’ rotation alongside Jacob deGrom in what the team hopes is a deep playoff run.
