Hall of fame catcher Mike Piazza was in Mets camp in Port St. Lucie on Monday and spoke to the media for close to an hour, covering everything from his advice to Francisco Lindor to how Italy has been dealing with the pandemic.

It’s the first time Piazza has chatted with the media since Steve Cohen took over and Mike is pretty excited about the possibilities. “The fans should rest well knowing the team is in good hands and the future looks bright,” Piazza said.

Piazza name dropped Michael Conforto, Jacob deGrom, James McCann, and Lindor as players he’s had the chance to talk to so far in camp. “Just go out and play, put numbers up and if it’s meant to be, he’s going to be here,” Piazza said was the focus of his talks with Lindor.

One of the biggest moments in Piazza’s career was the post-9/11 home run that helped New York heal, and without revealing any details, Mike says he will be in attendance (with other players from that team as well) on Sept. 11 this year for the 20th anniversary, when the Mets host the Yankees at Citi Field.

Again without saying any specifics, Piazza said he’s been going to bat for some players in terms of the Mets retiring numbers and their Hall of Fame. “I don’t want to spoil anything, but I think we will have some welcome additions this year.”
