Just a day after tying Darryl Strawberry‘s long-standing franchise record, New York Mets first baseman, Pete Alonso set the new mark on Sunday, blasting the 27th home run of his rookie season off Cubs left-hander Cole Hamels, tying the game at one in the top of the fourth.

Alonso, 24, has exploded onto the scene this year after having to fight for a roster spot this spring, originally making the team as a proposed platoon partner with the now-valuable bench cog, Dominic Smith.

He’s now two dingers behind Milwaukee’s Christian Yelich for most home runs in the majors, eighth in baseball with his .405 wOBA, and seventh with a 157 wRC+.

Strawberry, who set the record with 26 home runs in his rookie season of 1983, released a statement via the Mets, congratulating Alonso on his milestone homer.

“Congrats to Pete for breaking my record which has stood for a long time,” the 1986 World Series champion said. “What he’s done in a short period of time is most impressive. No goal seems out of reach. I wish Pete and the Mets all the best the rest of the year.”

We’ll keep you posted as more information becomes available.
