The Mets (42-59) opened their series in Milwaukee with a clunk, falling to the Brewers (63-37) by a score of 8-3 on Monday night at American Family Field. New York’s offense managed just six hits and went 1-for-4 with runners in scoring position, while the pitching staff couldn’t contain a Milwaukee lineup that piled up three home runs. The Brewers now hold the best record in Major League Baseball.
Freddy Peralta (5-9, 5.01 ERA) got the start for New York and had one of his roughest outings of the season, taking the loss. tossing 5 and 1/3 innings and allowed seven runs on eight hits, with two home runs, two walks, and six strikeouts.

Milwaukee jumped on him early, scoring two in the first on a walk, a double, and a single, and added another in the second on a Cooper Pratt solo home run (the first of his career) to make it 3-0.
New York got one back in the third when Francisco Alvarez singled, advanced to third on a fielding error, and scored on a Juan Soto double-play ball, but the Brewers answered right away in the bottom half with an Andrew Vaughn homer to push it to 5-1. Milwaukee blew the game open in the sixth. A leadoff walk and single chased Peralta from the game, and Xzavion Curry came on in relief and surrendered a three-run homer to Joey Ortiz on his very first batter faced, making it 8-1. Curry settled in from there, working 2 and 2/3 innings overall.
The Mets’ offense was mostly quiet, but did chip away late. In the eighth, Juan Soto walked, and Bo Bichette doubled him to third, then Francisco Lindor‘s fielder’s-choice groundout brought Soto home before Jorge Polanco‘s RBI single scored Bichette to make it 8-3. Bo Bichette had the best night at the plate for New York, going 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, while Jared Young and Francisco Alvarez each added a hit.

The Mets look to bounce back Tuesday in game two of the series in Milwaukee.
Zac Thornton (0-1, 2.60 ERA) will get the start for New York. The lefty last pitched against the Red Sox, where he threw seven shutout innings, allowing just two hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
Brandon Sproat (3-4, 5.16 ERA) will take the mound for Milwaukee. In his last time out against Pittsburgh, he threw three innings, allowing three runs on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts, and notably, three batters hit by a pitch.
