In the closest game that the Mets have played in recent weeks, Mike Pelfrey pitched an eight inning gem and after Bobby Parnell got into trouble, Hisanori Takahashi closed the door and the Mets won 2-1.

Game Notes

Mike Pelfrey pitched a gem today, going eight innings giving up six hits and two walks and striking out four. Pelf was great today, after a long first inning buckled down and started retiring batters effectively and getting outs when needed. Mike Pelfrey is learning to pitch without his best stuff, and this Pelfrey with the mid-3 ERA may be the true representation of who he is.

Bobby Parnell came out for the ninth, and after striking out Hunter Pence, he became hittable. Parnell could’ve possibly been in a better situation, but an Angel Pagan fielding error allowed Carlos Lee to advance to second on a single. Hisanori Takahashi came in, and after allowing a Jason Michaels RBI single, got a pop-out to shortstop and got rookie Tommy Manzella looking. The bullpen isn’t getting regular usage, and its frighteningly humorous how it takes not having a true closer for Jerry to let his pitchers go deep into games

The offense barely existed today, and was fueled by plate discipline and smart baserunning. What that means is a shallow flyball by David Wright became a sacrifice fly, scoring Luis Castillo and an anemic-hitting Ruben Tejada walked with the bases loaded. Nelson Figueroa was wild today, but he only allowed three hits. The Mets have trouble hitting pitchers who don’t throw hard, as they’ve been eaten up by Alex Sanabia, Livan Hernandez and a bevy of other soft-tossers.

Not gonna recap the offense. Three hits all game shouldn’t win any team a game.

Ruben Tejada, 1-2 with a walk….for what its worth.

Turning Point

Jeff Francoeur throwing to home in the fourth inning, getting Chris Johnson caught in a run-down. It was a great play that saved a run, and was the last baserunner to get further then first until the ninth inning

Game Ball

Mike Pelfrey for his outstanding outing today. Even with the anemic offense, Mike pitched like an ace.

On Deck
