One of the things that I love best about Gary, Keith and Ron, is that they can make their coverage of the Mets so entertaining and educating too, all while remaining objective at the same time. Their passion for the Mets is unquestioned and they do feel our pain. It’s their objectivity that puts them among the best broadcast teams in baseball.
Last night during the Mets broadcast, the subject of Mets prospect Fernando Martinez being placed on the disabled list came up.
Gary Cohen utters, “Seriously? Not again, this is becoming a recurring theme.”
Ron Darling took it one step further and actually seemed very annoyed by the news.
“I don’t know whether the young man simply has a low tolerance for pain, or if this is just a case of extremely bad luck. But these injuries aren’t doing his career any good.”
Obviously, Darling only said what most Mets fans are already thinking and what I have mentioned repeatedly on this site.

I’m not convinced that Martinez will ever be an impact hitter. Too many years have gone by with little to show for it.
Take a look at F-Mart’s games played in the last five years: 2006 – 76 games, 2007 – 63 games, 2008 – 90 games, 2009 – 74 games, 2010 – 71 games. In five years he’s only been able to play a little more than two seasons worth of games. Even Moises Alou fared better than that.
So now Fernando Martinez has been placed on the minor league disabled list again. This time it’s a case of mild knee soreness. It’s always something.
Ironically, he was placed on the DL on the same night as Fernando Martinez Bobblehead Night at Coca Cola Field. Reportedly, more than half of the bobbleheads were either broken or not working. Hmm…
