Pedro Martinez took the mound for the Dominican Republic this afternoon and served notice to Major League Baseball that he still has plenty of gas left in the tank.
Pedro threw three shutout innings and allowed just one hit while walking none.
Of his 40 pitches thrown, 32 of them were for strikes, a remarkable achievement.
If you were worried about his durability, fear not. Pedro got stronger as he went along and in spectacular fashion he struck out four of the last five batters he faced.
Afterward he reiterated that he wants one more opportunity to pitch and help a team win a championship. He said that last season he was overwhelmed with rehab physically, and the death of his father mentally.
He has made it very clear that his first choice is to pitch with the Mets and finish his career with them, but the Mets have closed the door on Pedro.
Of the candidates the Mets brought in to replace Pedro, none of them have done anything to distinguish themselves.
It’s too bad the Mets are so dead set against giving Pedro a second look. I just pray he doesn’t end up pitching for the Phillies, Braves or Marlins.
