According to a tweet via David Lennon of Newsday, Omar Minaya will be making an unscheduled flight with the team to Atlanta for their series with the Braves, although the decision was not made during today’s game.

I may be reading too much into this, but Jerry Manuel has been on the proverbial hot seat of late, and the team has lacked the life and enthusiasm that seemed so prevalent only two weeks ago when the Mets were riding high and sitting temporarily in first place.

The team has fallen back on some bad habits and disturbing trends that could signal the end is near for any of the coaches in addition to Jerry Manuel.

  • Mets starters have allowed more walks than any other team in the Major Leagues despite all the talk of making it a team focus in the spring.
  • Their premier hitter David Wright may have found his power stroke, but nobody expected him to lead the league with 50 strikeouts in only 129 at-bats.
  • Their lone offseason major signing Jason Bay, has failed to ignite the offense as expected and has yet to provide any bang for the buck this season.
  • The Mets own the worst road record in baseball and are last in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and runs scored.
  • The third highest paid player on the team, Oliver Perez, has been a colossal bust and has been yanked from the rotation and refused an assignment to the minors where he could have worked out his problems.
  • John Maine has lost so much velocity that he can no longer be counted on to provide quality innings. Making matters worse is his inability to consistently throw strikes.
  • Lefthander Jon Niese was removed from todays game after sustaing a hamstring injury. It’s same injury and the same leg that forced him to miss the rest of the season in 2009. He is flying to New York for an MRI on Monday.
  • Mets starters have not registered a win in sixteen straight games. It’s the longest winless drought since the 1982 season.

Jerry Manuel could be having another meeting with Omar Minaya after todays game, only this time Oliver Perez will not be the primary topic of discussion. In fact, I’m wondering if Jerry Manuel still be the manager of the NY Mets when the meeting concludes?

Stay tuned… This could be a long and very interesting evening…
