The Mets have released Kiko Calero, tweets David Lennon of Newsday.

The Mets had signed Calero to a minor league deal back in March, but health was a big concern for the 35-year-old who failed to make the team this spring.

Calero posted a 1.95 ERA in 67 relief appearances for the Marlins in 2009, but in ten appearances for the Bisons, he pitched 17 innings and recorded a 10.59 ERA.

So much for that theory…

Adam Rubin reported that Jerry Manuel definitively stated there are no plans to send Jenrry Mejia to the minors at some point this season to stretch out for a starting role.

“Not at this point,” the manager said.

Manuel reiterated his belief that Mejia’s development is not being stunted by relief work because there’s a value in facing major league hitters in major league ballparks.

Pitching coach Dan Warthen said the goal is to lengthen Mejia’s relief outings in the hope of getting him to log 100 innings during the major league season. Mejia then would be asked to go to winter ball to start to prepare for earning a rotation spot next spring training.

It’s a good plan and I don’t understand the argument from so many other Mets fans on this. For some reason there is this unfounded theory that if you let a young starting pitching prospect break in as a reliever, that it will lead to some kind of doomsday scenario for the prospect and the team. He’s 20 years old, let him pitch!

Ryota Igarashi, who began his rehab assignment on Saturday night with St. Lucie, is schedule to appear again with the Florida State League club on Monday. Igarashi then is due to join Triple-A Buffalo, with appearances likely on Thursday and Friday. After recovering from that work, Igarashi (left hamstring) may be ready to be activated from the disabled list.

This is where the Oliver Perez situation will hogtie the organization… With Perez wasting a bullpen spot, the Mets will now have to cut a more capable reliever to make room for Iggy. Cut this selfish loser loose and move on. It was a bad deal, all teams make them, now lets just put it behind us.
