Will the Mets prove to be contenders, or slip further into oblivion as pretenders?

Well, over the next few weeks we will find out.

New York is hooked up to life support and is hanging by a thread. With their win on Saturday, the Mets currently sit 6.5 games out of first place and five games out of the second wild card spot.

After a rough west coast road trip, the team has been able to bounce back by taking series against the San Francisco Giants and Colorado Rockies, as well as earning a split in a two-game set against the Yankees.

However, after their series finale with the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday, New York’s schedule until the All-Star break is going to be an uphill battle.

The team travels to Atlanta for a three-game set, followed by four with the Cubs next weekend. After that, they face off against the Phillies away for four games, Atlanta at home for three, the Yankees at home for two and finally the Phillies again for three to go into the All-Star break.

There have been many positives with the Mets so far this year, but also many glaring negatives.

On Saturday, general manager Brodie Van Wagenen stuck to his guns and offered his full faith in the team, despite their spot in the standings.

“I don’t think we are looking at anything as a lost season,” Van Wagenen said. “We have talent, we have heart and we have a group of people who believe in each other and will pick each other up.”

The next few weeks will prove, or disprove, his words.

If there is any magic in this team, now’s the time it needs to happen. It will determine weather they will be buyers or sellers at the deadline, and more importantly, what their trajectory is for the future.

So, are you ready, Mets? Because you’re on the clock.
