Last week was a tale of two very different halves for the Mets. For their first three games, they played a spectacular series against the Dodgers, winning two of three games versus baseball’s best team at a packed and energetic Citi Field. Over the weekend though, the Mets completely let go of that momentum, dropping two of three games (both losses in blowout fashion) to the league-worst Nationals.

Despite the disappointing end to the week and concerns about the team’s offensive struggles all too real, the Mets still have held onto first place in the division. Entering this crucial new week, New York leads Atlanta by a slim one game.

Hitter of the Week

Brandon Nimmo batted .320 last week with an .800 OPS, with three of his hits going for extra bases. He recorded multi-hit games in the first two games of the Dodgers series, but his best game of the entire season may have come during Saturday’s 2-1 win.

In addition to collecting two hits in the game, Nimmo made the Mets catch of the year, a leaping grab in center to rob the Dodgers’ Justin Turner of the would-be tying home run. Possibly one of the best catches in all of baseball this season, Nimmo’s catch was the ultimate reason why the Mets held on to win the game. His defensive heroics will surely go down as one of the best plays in Mets regular season history.

Pitcher of the Week

Jacob deGrom reached seven innings this season for the first time since returning from the injured list. He allowed just three hits, one walk, one run, and struck out nine batters over his dominant start. Possibly his best outing of the season thus far, Jake was almost flawless against the best lineup in baseball.

DeGrom has now struck out exactly nine batters in each of his past three starts. The lone run he allowed was a solo homer to Mookie Betts, but otherwise, deGrom looked every bit the dominant pitcher he has been since returning to the Mets rotation in the beginning of August. He ended the month with a 1.98 ERA over five starts.
