Jon Niese turned in another strong performance last night as he allowed just two runs while striking out five batters in seven innings. Despite his struggles earlier in the season, Niese has been one of the most consistent and unheralded members of the Mets’ rotation.

In 135 innings this year, Niese owns a 3.46 ERA and has a 7-9 record. He has struck out 91 batters, and has walked only 37.

Even though his stuff isn’t overpowering, he’s exactly the type of pitcher the Mets need in the backend of their rotation.

Since the beginning of June, Niese is 4-4 with a 2.76 ERA. He also has 11 quality starts in his last 12 outings. Going back to 2012, he is tied for 5th in the National League with 73 quality starts with Lance Lynn of St. Louis.

Part of Niese’s success is that he’s developed into a more crafty and intelligent pitcher on the mound.

“I’ve sort of figured it out now,” Niese said after the game. “I know now that my stuff is good enough to get outs. Not every out has to come on a strikeout. And the way we’re hitting now, I don’t have to think about taking chances to get outs. It’s easier this way. … We’ve got a good plan for each game, and all we’re trying to do is execute.” (Marty Noble, MLB.com)

Niese also says that he has more confidence now that the lineup is much improved with the additions of Yoenis Cespedes, Kelly Johnson and Juan Uribe.

“It’s good to know with our offense right now, at any given point, they can blow up and score three or four runs in an inning,” Niese said. “It’s a good feeling to know that one mistake isn’t going to cost you the game.” (Brian Heyman, Newsday)
