Jeff McNeil wants to be an All-Star, and he’s done everything he could do to become one. That includes his starring in Step Brother spoofs with friend and teammate Pete Alonso to get the votes needed to be a starter.

While spoofs like that are fun, if McNeil is going to be an All-Star, it’s going to be based on what he does on the field. Based on what he did yesterday at Wrigley, there should be no doubt he’s an All-Star.

At the plate, McNeil had yet another multi-hit game. It was his fourth straight such game, and it was his 27th multi-hit game over his 62 games played.

In the game, he was 2-for-5 with a run, home run, and three RBI. His two run homer in the fourth off Yu Darvish gave the Mets a lead. That wouldn’t prove to be enough, and he’d come up with two outs in the eighth with an opportunity to drive home a run

McNeil did just that delivering an RBI single scoring Adeiny Hechavarria to put the Mets up 5-4.

McNeil didn’t just show why he should be an All Star with his play at the plate, he’d go so with his play on the field.

For the first time in his career, he’s start in right field. He’d immediately make plays against the ivy like he played right field in Wrigley all his life. But you know he’d hadn’t when he commented after one such play about how soft the ivy was.

In the eighth, Mickey Callaway started getting his defensive replacements in, which would move McNeil from right to left. In that inning, he’d deke Anthony Rizzo, who would then got into a rundown. His getting tagged out ended that rally and the Cubs last chance to tie the score.

Overall, this game showed what makes McNeil such a unique and important player. He plays well defensively across the diamond, he’s a hitting machine, and he’s clutch. This game gave the Mets a much needed win, and it showcased why McNeil needs to be an All-Star. That is why it’s this week’s Neon Moment of the Week!
