With the trade deadline on the horizon, the rumors have begun. One such rumor is about closer Addison Reed as Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that the Mets “probably wouldn’t deal him to the Nationals, but there’s plenty of interest.”
Reed, who will be a free agent at the end of the season if not extended, has pitched well for the Mets this season, posting a 2.59 ERA, 3.04 FIP, and 1.104 WHIP in 41.2 innings, striking out 42 and saving 14 games.
The Nationals are currently in first place in the NL East with a 48-34 record, while the Mets are in third place with a 38-43 mark. The Nats bullpen is the worst in the Majors going by pretty much any statistic, and if they are gearing up for a playoff push, they need to improve their bullpen. If the Mets choose to trade Reed, he could draw serious trade offers from the Nationals as well as other teams.
I don’t see the Mets trading Reed to the Nationals under any circumstances. If they do choose to trade him, it will almost certainly be out of the division, if not the National League. The Nats will have to find bullpen help elsewhere.
