Former Mets outfielder Yoenis Céspedes is set to return to his home country of Cuba to play baseball, as noted by Cuban sports commentator Carlos Hernández Luján.  Due to outstanding professional commitments abroad, Céspedes won’t be part of the initial team selection in his home country. This could result in him starting his at a later date. Céspedes, with an impressive eight-season career in the majors under his belt, most notably with the Oakland Athletics and the New York Mets, last played in the majors in 2020, when he appeared in only eight games of the 60-game season.

2009: The Mets made what is considered their worst free agent signing in history, inking Jason Bay to a four-year, $66 million contract. Despite attempts to live up to the hefty contract, Bay struggled to match expectations. Bay, while trying his best, couldn’t justify the massive contract, and the Mets, in hindsight, were criticized for offering such a lucrative deal. Plagued with injuries and massive slumps, the Mets cut bait with Bay after the 2012 season.
