Good morning, Mets fans!

The Mets officially announced their 2025 spring training roster, which includes some of the team’s top prospects – Drew Gilbert, Ryan Clifford, Brandon Sproat, Jonah Tong, and Jett Williams. All four players are expected to begin the season in the minor leagues. Pitchers and catchers report to Port St. Lucie tomorrow.

Griffin Canning told reporters on Monday that he believes he’s competing for a spot in the team’s starting rotation. Canning has worked almost exclusively as a starter in his career but is projected by FanGraphs to begin the year as a reliever.

Ryne Stanek told reporters that he appreciated how the team took care of his family after he was traded to the team last summer, which is part of what led him to re-sign with the team. Stanek also spoke highly of the vibes in the clubhouse and expects to have a similar to what he had in 2024.

Francisco Alvarez said Monday that he believes the Mets have the best lineup in baseball, and his goal is to win the World Series. Alvarez also said his mind will be much stronger this year and he looks forward to working with Kodai Senga for a full season.

Right-hander Dylan Covey has elected free agency after the Mets recently designated him for assignment. Covey was signed by the Mets the day after the World Series but was the roster casualty for Stanek.

The Cubs are considering signing Justin Turner if they miss out on Alex Bregman, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. A two-time All-Star, Turner spent 2024 with the Blue Jays and Mariners, batting .259/.354/.383 with 11 homers in 539 plate appearances. The 40-year-old played just 49 games in the field, 43 of which were at first base.

The Hall of Fame announced that Billy Wagner will wear an Astros cap on his plaque. Wagner recorded 225 of his 422 saves over his nine seasons in Houston. CC Sabathia will don a Yankees cap, Ichiro Suzuki will represent the Mariners, Dave Parker will don the Pirates logo, and Dick Allen will wear a Phillies cap.

The Dodgers have hired Fahran Zaidi as a special advisor. He will also assist owner Mark Walter in other sports interests. Zaidi was fired from his role as president of baseball operations by the Giants at the end of the 2024 season. Prior to his time in San Francisco, Zaidi spent five years as the Dodgers’ general manager.

In other Dodgers news, president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said his team’s usage of the two-way player designation for Shohei Ohtani played a role in their pitch to Rōki Sasaki. Friedman said it showed that his team was best equipped to help Sasaki transition to the majors.

Two teams revealed they will wear jersey patches to honor departed franchise icons. The Reds will wear a number 14 patch for Pete Rose, while the Brewers will wear one with Bob Uecker‘s signature.

The Yankees have agreed to a minor league deal with left-hander Tyler Matzek. The left-hander missed all of 2023 after undergoing Tommy John surgery and only pitched in 11 games in 2024 before landing back on the injured list with elbow inflammation in May.

2010: The Mets sign Japanese lefty Hisanori Takahashi after his decade-long stint with NPB’s Yomiuri Giants. The 35-year-old enjoyed a bounce-back season in 2009, posting a 2.94 ERA with 126 strikeouts against 36 walks in 144 innings. New York also reunites with first baseman Mike Jacobs, who spent the past year in Kansas City, clubbing 19 homers in 478 plate appearances.
