The White Sox are close to a minor league deal with outfielder Tommy Pham. The 36-year-old split time between the Mets and Diamondbacks in 2023, batting a solid .256/.328/.446 (111 OPS+) 16 homers, 27 doubles, and 22 steals over 481 plate appearances. Pham also went 8-for-19 with a homer and three doubles in the World Series.

After Dwight Gooden‘s jersey retirement ceremony and a 45-minute rain delay, Jose Buttó struck out nine and allowed just two hits over six shutout innings, and the Mets rallied for two runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Royals, 2-1. The Mets have now won three series in a row and seven of their last 10 games after starting 0-5. After the game, Carlos Mendoza said Buttó is “not going anywhere” and will get more opportunities to start. Buttó has allowed just one run over 12 innings through two starts so far.

The Mets begin a three-game series with the upstart Pirates at Citi Field this evening. Pittsburgh currently sits at 11-5 and is tied with the Brewers for first place in the NL Central. Adrian Houser (0-1, 5.40 ERA) will take the hill for the Mets against southpaw Martín Pérez. Last year, the Mets and Pirates split their season series, with the Mets winning two of the three games at Citi Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM.

In addition to calling up Buttó, the Mets recalled right-hander Grant Hartwig from Triple-A Syracuse. Righty Cole Sulser and lefty Tyler Jay were optioned to Syracuse.

The Cubs are signing former All-Star righty Julio Teheran. The 33-year-old was designated for assignment by the Mets after he gave up four runs in 2 2/3 innings in his lone start on April 8.

The Rangers have placed lefty Cody Bradford on the injured list and called up former first-round pick Cole Winn. Bradford has allowed just three runs in 19 1/3 innings so far in 2024.

The Pirates have recalled right-hander Ryder Ryan from Triple-A Indianapolis and placed lefty Marco Gonzales on the 15-day IL. Top prospect Paul Skenes is not expected to take Gonzales’ spot in the rotation.

The Mariners are calling up outfielder Jonatan Clase from Triple-A Tacoma. Clase has a 1.045 OPS in 47 plate appearances this season.

2009: Óliver Pérez tosses six innings of one-run ball as the Mets earn their first regular season victory at Citi Field, defeating the Padres 7-2. Carlos Delgado hits a solo homer, and the Mets score three runs on a passed ball in the seventh inning.

2022: The Mets unveil a statue of Tom Seaver outside of Citi Field before the home opener against the Diamondbacks. Then, the Mets get homers from Robinson Canó, Starling Marte, and Francisco Lindor as they trounce Arizona, 10-3. Lindor homers from both sides of the plate in the winning effort. Chris Bassitt holds the D-Backs to just one run and two hits over six innings.
