Starling Marte said Monday that he is progressing well from his recent groin injury. Marte believes it would be beneficial for him to go on a rehab assignment before returning to action, but he doesn’t know when that will begin. Buck Showalter mentioned there’s a possibility of shutting Marte down for the season, but they haven’t come to that conclusion yet.

Brandon Nimmo, Jonathan Araúz, and Daniel Vogelbach all hit homers, and the Mets scored in each of the first six innings of a home game for the first time since 1987 to take down the Pirates, 7-2. Tyson Miller, Sam Coonrod, Phil Bickford, Trevor Gott, and Adam Ottavino combined for six scoreless innings of relief after Carlos Carrasco departed with 88 pitches in three innings.

The Mets continue their series with the Pirates tonight at Citi Field. David Peterson (3-7, 5.61 ERA) will look to continue his solid stretch of pitching against fellow southpaw Bailey Falter (0-7, 5.21 ERA). Since getting recalled from Triple-A on June 27, Peterson has a 2.40 ERA in 30 innings.

Tonight is Edwin Díaz trumpet bobblehead day, and Díaz will be on hand for the game.

Justin Verlander took to his Twitter account to address recent comments in a New York Post article that said he was a “diva” according to someone in the Mets’ clubhouse. Verlander said he has nothing but respect for the Mets organization and that his criticism of the Mets’ analytics department was meant to be constructive.

The Rays placed Wander Franco on the Restricted List while MLB carries out its investigation regarding some recent social media posts. Franco and the Rays mutually agreed that he will be on leave from the club at least through the end of their current road trip.

The Braves’ Ozzie Albeis was placed on the 10-day injured list with a hamstring strain.

The Giants have called up outfield prospect Wade Meckler from Triple-A. Meckler was an eighth-round pick out of Oregon State in 2022 and has risen all the way up from High-A this season, hitting a cumulative .379/.463/.522 in 294 plate appearances across three levels in 2023.

1999: Kenny Rogers tosses the Mets’ first complete game of the season, snapping a 139-game drought as the Mets down the Giants, 12-5. Robin Ventura hits a grand slam, Edgardo Alfonzo homers and drives in four, and Mike Piazza adds a homer and three RBIs in support of Rogers, who also collects a hit of his own.

2000: The Mets sweep the Rockies in a doubleheader at Shea Stadium, and Armando Benitez gets the save in both games. A four-run seventh is the difference in Game 1, while Todd Zeile‘s eighth-inning homer off Bobby Chouinard puts the Mets over top in the nightcap.

2006: The Mets get routed by the Phillies for the second straight day, but Jose Reyes cracks three home runs to make sure the team doesn’t suffer another shutout. Reyes hits a pair of solo shots off Randy Wolf and adds a two-run shot off Brian Sanches.
