The New York Mets showed some fight with a series win over the playoff-contending Chicago Cubs to open the week before dropping three out of four to the buzzsaw that is the Atlanta Braves over the weekend. During that stretch, Pete Alonso and Kodai Senga, who were the team’s two All-Star nods this season, proved why they were worthy of that title with gutsy performances against stout competition.

Hitter of the Week

The Pete Alonso train just keeps chugging along.

Alonso opened his week on Monday with one of the best games of his season thus far. He ripped a three-run homer off Drew Smyly in the first inning before doubling up with a two-run shot in the third inning. He closed the day out with an RBI single in the eighth to put a cap on an 11-3 win over Chicago.

On Tuesday, he drove in the Mets’ only two runs of the contest in the first inning with a two-run home run off Jameson Taillon. He closed out the series against the Cubs with yet another two-run bomb, this time against Kyle Hendricks while otherwise contributing with two walks.

Alonso was hitless in New York’s series against the Braves before singling in the sixth inning of Sunday’s contest, but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t productive up to that point. He drew three walks on Thursday before doing so twice on Friday.

Alonso finished the week hitting .286/.483/.857/1.340 with four homers and 10 RBI.

Pitcher of the Week

Kodai Senga continued his run of dominance with two good showings against a pair of National League contenders.

Senga’s first start of the week came on Monday against the Cubs. He held Chicago scoreless through the first two innings before Cody Bellinger tagged him with an RBI single in the third. Bellinger would go on to drive in another run in the fifth, but that’s all the Cubs could muster against Senga in his six innings of work. He finished the day with six strikeouts while allowing seven hits and two walks.

Senga’s second outing came on Sunday against Atlanta. His night got off to a rough start as he served up a three-run double to Marcell Ozuna in the first inning, but it was smooth sailing from there. He didn’t allow another run the rest of the way while setting down 13 straight Braves hitters immediately following Ozuna’s double, striking out seven hitters over his six innings of work in the process.

In total, Senga threw 12 innings this week while allowing five runs on 11 hits and striking out 13 hitters.
