The Mets trailed from the outset on Sunday afternoon, and after the offense rallied to tie the game 7-7, Adam Ottavino surrendered a tie-breaking home run to Nolan Arenado, which gave the Cardinals an 8-7 victory. Francisco Lindor and Tommy Pham both homered, but Carlos Carrasco was touched up for six runs (five earned) on five hits and three walks, including home runs by Arenado and Paul DeJong. Before the game, the Mets activated Pete Alonso from the injured list and sent Mark Vientos back to Triple-A Syracuse. The Mets still haven’t won a series since they swept the Phillies from May 30-June 1 and after giving up four more homers Sunday, they’ve allowed 100 long balls on the season.

The Mets now head to Houston to begin a three-game series with the reigning World Series champion Astros tonight. Max Scherzer (5-2, 4.45 ERA) will look to get back on track against rookie sensation Hunter Brown (6-3, 3.35 ERA). The Astros won all four games they played against the Mets last year and haven’t lost to them since the final weekend of the 2014 season. In addition, the Mets haven’t won a game at Minute Maid Park since May 15, 2011. First pitch is scheduled for 8:10 p.m.
