The Mets are in Atlanta this week for their final set of showdowns with the Braves beginning tonight. David Peterson (3-7, 5.45 ERA) will take the hill for the Mets, while the Braves haven’t announced their starter yet. The Braves have handled the Mets very well this year, winning eight of the 10 matchups, including outscoring them 40-10 in their four-game series from August 11-13.

Pete Alonso smacked his 39th home run of the season, but Carlos Carrasco got knocked out in the fifth inning as the Mets dropped their series finale against the Cardinals, 7-3. Alonso finished the week with four homers and now has 94 RBIs on the season. The Mets sit seven games out of the final Wild Card spot in the NL.

The Padres have promoted catching prospect Ethan Salas to Double-A. In his first full season as a pro, the 17-year-old has a .782 OPS across 257 plate appearances between A and High-A ball. He’s ranked as the sixth-best prospect in baseball according to Baseball America.

The Nationals are promoting their 2023 first-round draft pick Dylan Crews to Double-A as well. Taken second overall out of LSU in July, Crews has hit a blistering .383/.449/.683 with five homers and 24 RBIs in his first 14 games as a pro.

1971: Locked in their second duel in 10 days, Tom Seaver emerges victorious over Dave Roberts and the Padres, 2-1 thanks to a walk-off home run by Cleon Jones.

1972: Jim Beauchamp hits his first two homers of the season on his birthday, including a walk-off shot to beat the Astros, 4-2. Beauchamp is the first Met to homer twice on his birthday.

2005: Pinch-hitting in the bottom of the fifth inning, Mike Jacobs hits a three-run homer in his first major league at-bat against Esteban Loaiza of the Nationals. Unfortunately, the Mets drop the contest 7-4.

2015: Yoenis Céspedes goes deep three times, including a grand slam, driving in seven runs as the Mets win a barn-burner at Coors Field, 14-9. Céspedes also finishes a triple shy of the cycle, flying out to the warning track in his final at-bat of the game.

2022: Mark Canha hits a game-tying three-run homer in the seventh inning and a go-ahead two-run homer off Phillies closer David Robertson in the ninth as the Mets stun Philadelphia in a 10-9 victory. Brandon Nimmo adds a homer of his own, and Edwin Díaz strikes out Darick Hall with the tying and winning runs on base to end the game. The Mets finish the season series against the Phillies 14-5.
