The Mets are in Atlanta for a big three-game set with the Braves starting today. The Mets dropped their series finale with the Marlins, 2-0, while the Braves walked off the Nationals, trimming the Mets’ division lead to just a game and a half. Max Scherzer (5-1, 2.26 ERA) will toe the rubber for the Mets against first-time All-Star Max Fried (9-2, 2.52 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:20 this evening.

Four Mets were named to the All-Star Game yesterday. Pete Alonso, Jeff McNeil, Starling Marte, and Edwin Díaz will all head to Los Angeles next week, and this is the second time for all of them that they’ve been selected for the Midsummer Classic.

James McCann was placed on the 10-day IL with an oblique injury. The 32-year-old injured himself making a tag on Saturday, and he’s expected to miss more than 10 days. Patrick Mazeika was called up to take the roster spot. In more encouraging news, Starling Marte’s MRI didn’t show anything too concerning, and he’s considered day-to-day.

The Mets claimed lefty Sam Clay off waivers from the Phillies and designated right-hander Jake Reed for assignment. Clay had previously been designated for assignment by the Nationals this season before the Phillies picked him up. In 4 1/3 innings this year, Clay has been tagged with five runs.

Mark Vientos has been named to the Futures Game as a replacement. Vientos will join his Syracuse teammate Francisco Álvarez in representing the Mets at Dodger Stadium.

Jeff McNeil is going on paternity leave, making him unavailable for the Mets’ series in Atlanta. Kramer Robertson is up in his place.

First-time All-Star Yordan Álvarez was placed on the IL due to a hand injury. Dusty Baker said that Álvarez has been playing through the injury, but it’s progressively gotten worse.

William Contreras was announced as the starting designated hitter for the NL due to Bryce Harper‘s injury. Contreras will join his brother Willson on the NL squad, making them the first pair of brothers to appear in the same All-Star Game since Bret and Aaron Boone in 2003.

Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports that the Yankees are discussing acquiring Andrew Benintendi from the Royals and trading Joey Gallo. While nothing is close, Heyman says that Gallo is drawing some interest.

The Braves acquired former Met Robinson Canó from the Padres for cash considerations. Canó has gone just 11-for-74 in the majors in 2022, but he’s hit .333 with an .854 OPS in Triple-A El Paso.
