Morning Briefing: Jose Iglesias Returned to Citi Field

Good morning, Mets fans!

Fernando Tatis Jr. did everything he could to stop the Mets winning ways on Tuesday night at Citi Field. He hit two home runs and stole a grand slam from Francisco Lindor in the Padres’ 5-2 win. Luis Torrens and Luis Robert Jr. each hit a solo home run for the Mets.

Before the game, former Mets legend Jose Iglesias was on hand to throw out the first pitch. “I’m extremely happy to be home,” Iglesias said. “There are a lot of emotions right now. Being in this part of the field, sitting on this bench, it reminds me of great moments. I’m very happy to be here tonight.”

Iglesias is set to make his Broadway debut in Buena Vista Social Club next week.

The Mets optioned right-hander Chayce McDermott to Triple-A Syracuse and brought back right-hander Austin Warren. McDermott gave up two runs in 3 1/3 innings in two outings to begin his Mets career.

Tuesday was a big night for prospects the Mets acquired at the deadline. Émilien Pitre (Peralta trade) had two hits, including a double, as the leadoff hitter for Syracuse in his Triple-A debut. Billy Amick (Minter trade) struck out three times, but also had an RBI double in his Triple-A debut.

Down in Double-A, Jefferson Rojas (Holmes trade) went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, his second home run and a double for Binghamton. Right-hander Gary Gill Hill (Peralta trade) pitched six innings of two-run ball with eight strikeouts. Right-hander Luke Gabrysh (Raley trade) was promoted to Double-A Binghamton.

The fun doesn’t stop there, John Spikerman (Raley trade) had two home runs while Aidan Smith (Peralta trade) was on base five times and stole four bases.

At Single-A St. Lucie, right-hander Justin Hagenman made his first rehab appearance. He went 2 1/3 innings, allowing one run and striking out three.
