Morning Briefing: Howard Johnson to Receive Thurman Munson Award

Mets Hall of Famer Howard Johnson will receive the Thurman Munson Award at the 44th annual AHRC New York City Foundation dinner on March 14. The award recognizes individuals for their on-field excellence and the betterment of sports and their community. Four-time World Series champion Tino Martinez and NYC Basketball Hall of Famer Anne Gregory O’Connell are the other honorees.

Adrian Houser struck out five batters in 3 1/3 scoreless innings, but Shintaro Fujinami allowed two runs in the eighth inning as the Mets dropped their game to the Tigers on Sunday, 3-2. Mark Vientos and Tomás Nido both hit homers.

The Mets host the Marlins this evening at 6:10, with Tylor Megill looking to continue his strong play against lefty Trevor Rogers. Most notably, Edwin Díaz is scheduled to make his Grapefruit League debut. The game will be televised on SNY.

Brewers closer Devin Williams has been dealing with a sore back and will be seeking a second opinion from a spine specialist this week. Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentine l said the issue has flared up during camp and while the team isn’t overly concerned, they are going to be cautious with Williams.

The Mariners announced the signing of Ryne Stanek to a one-year deal. However, they placed Jackson Kowar on the 60-day IL and he will undergo Tommy John surgery to repair a torn UCL.
