Good morning, Mets fans! What a painful night.
The Mets (18-26) lost the Subway Series opener at Citi Field, but the bigger blow came after the game when it was revealed that Clay Holmes broke his right fibula on a 111 mph comebacker hit by Spencer Jones in the fourth inning. Carlos Mendoza said the dependable Holmes, who will be added to the injured list with a 2.39 ERA, will “be down for a long time.”
Holmes (4-4) was visited by the trainer after the play, but stayed in the game for another inning. X-rays later showed the broken bone in his leg. He gave up four earned runs on seven hits, walked two and struck out eight over 4 1/3 innings. Robert Colonna has more here on where the Mets could go with Holmes’ spot in the rotation.

Cam Schlittler struck out nine over 6 2/3 innings and gave up one run on Juan Soto‘s 250th career homer, his sixth of the year. Nathan Cooper has more on the loss here.
Lefty Carlos Rodón (0-0, 6.23 ERA) will go for the Yankees Saturday in a 7:15 p.m. ET start at Citi Field. The Mets haven’t named a starter, but David Peterson is expected to pitch in bulk relief. The game will air on FOX.
