The Cleveland Guardians have been granted permission to interview Craig Counsell for their managerial opening, but Terry Pluto of Cleveland.com says an MLB source told him it’s a long shot the club lands Counsell. Pluto says given Counsell’s ties to the Milwaukee area, he thinks the 53-year-old will remain with the Brewers.

The World Series shifts to the desert today, with Game 3 between the Diamondbacks and Rangers set to begin at 8:03 p.m. Max Scherzer will take the hill for the Rangers, while youngster Brandon Pfaadt will toe the rubber for the Diamondbacks, looking to continue his run of postseason success. Randy Johnson and Luis Gonzalez will throw out the ceremonial first pitches tonight.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that Torii Hunter has emerged as a candidate for the Angels’ managerial position. Hunter played in Anaheim for five seasons and is highly-regarded by Angels owner Arte Moreno. Angels greats Darin Erstad and Tim Salmon are under consideration as well, along with Ron Roenicke, Buck Showalter, and Benji Gil.

The Rays are beginning interviews for their vacant coaching positions, most notably for their first base coach. Internal candidates will likely include minor league skippers Michael Johns and Morgan Ensberg.

2015: In the first World Series game in Citi Field history, Noah Syndergaard threw the first pitch of the night near the head of Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar. David Wright and Curtis Granderson both hit two-run homers, and Wright added a two-run single later in the game in a 9-3 Mets victory. Syndergaard earned the win on the mound, allowing three runs and striking out six over six innings.

2020: Major League Baseball owners officially approve Steve Cohen as the new owner of the Mets. 26 of the 30 owners voted in Cohen’s favor.
