2023 Review

The Mets traded for Trevor Gott on July 3, 2023, when the team still had a slim hope to make the playoffs.

Gott was having a solid first half with the Mariners, pitching to a 1.66 ERA in his first 25 2/3 innings of the season. A lower back injury derailed his season, and Gott ballooned his ERA to 4.03 after allowing eight earned runs in 3 1/3 innings.

Gott was placed on the 15-day injured list and was cleared of injury once traded to New York. He unfortunately couldn’t find his previous success and struggled in his first two months with the Mets.

July was by far Gott’s worst month. He pitched to a 7.04 ERA and allowed six earned runs, nine hits, four walks, and one home run in 7 2/3 innings. The Mets went 14-9 in July despite Gott’s struggles.

Gott was clearly rusty coming back from a back injury and improved in August. While he still recorded a poor 4.91 ERA, it was a full three runs lower than July and his strikeouts per nine innings jumped from seven to 13.1. Gott finished the month with 16 strikeouts in 11 innings but also allowed 14 hits and six runs.

The Mets got a glimpse of Gott’s former success in Seattle in September and October. Gott cut his WHIP down to 1.065, allowing seven hits and four walks in 10 1/3 innings. His strikeouts per nine dipped back down to seven, but he recorded a 1.74 ERA in the final two months. Gott became a reliable reliever once again.

Gott’s 2023 was subpar. There’s no way around it. He finished with a 4.43 ERA with the Mets and was never the late-inning arm that the organization thought they were getting. The main culprit behind Gott’s struggles were the baserunners. He allowed at least seven hits every month with the Mets and finished with a high 1.414 WHIP in 29 innings.

2024 Overview

Gott enters his final year of arbitration ahead of the 2024 season. He is currently estimated to make $1.8 million in 2024 by Spotrac.com.

The Mets could designate Gott for assignment, but his underlying statistics show he is due for an improved 2024.

Gott finished 2023 with a 3.40 xERA, 3.43 FIP, and .326 BABIP. The first two numbers combined with the high BABIP show that Gott dealt with some unlucky hits that led to his high 4.43 ERA. Gott also finished in the 92nd percentile for barrel percentage, further explaining his higher-than-expected ERA.

Cutting Gott wouldn’t make much sense either. The Mets bullpen is thin. Edwin Díaz, Adam Ottavino, Brooks Raley, and Drew Smith are the only reliable names out of the Mets bullpen. If Gott bounces back, as his advanced numbers tell, then the Mets will have one arm they can trust out of the bullpen.
