The Giants formally interviewed assistant coach Alyssa Nakken for their managerial opening. Nakken became the first full-time coach in MLB history when San Francisco hired her in 2020. She is now the first woman to interview for a managerial position.

Jordan Montgomery tossed 6 1/3 shutout innings, allowing five hits and striking out five, and the Rangers’ bullpen combined to record the final eight outs as Texas took Game 1 of the ALCS, 2-0. Justin Verlander allowed two runs and six hits, striking out five over 6 2/3 innings. Jonah Heim‘s RBI single and Leody Taveras‘ solo homer were all the offense in the game. The Astros had the tying run at the plate in the eighth inning, but Evan Carter‘s leaping catch in left field on Alex Bregman‘s fly ball turned into a double play when Jose Altuve failed to re-touch second base going back to first. The Rangers are now 6-0 this postseason.

The Rangers officially added Max Scherzer to their roster for the ALCS. The 39-year-old last pitched for Texas on September 12 when he suffered a shoulder injury. In eight starts for the Rangers, Scherzer turned in a 3.20 ERA with 53 strikeouts over 45 innings.

Kai Correa has reportedly interviewed for the Giants’ managerial job. The 35-year-old has served as the team’s bench coach since 2020. He was the team’s interim manager after Gabe Kapler got fired during the final weekend of the regular season.

1969: Trailing 3-0 in Game 5 of the World Series, Donn Clendenon hits a two-run homer in the sixth inning, and Al Weis ties the game with a solo shot in the seventh inning. Ron Swoboda‘s double in the eighth inning gives the Mets the lead, and Jerry Koosman gets Davey Johnson to fly out to Cleon Jones to secure the team’s first World Series title. Clendenon is named series MVP.

1999: John Olerud homers and hits a two-run single as the Mets keep their season alive with a 3-2 victory over the Braves in Game 2 of the NLCS. Rick Reed holds the Braves to just one hit over seven shutout innings on the mound.

2000: Mike Hampton tosses a complete-game shutout to send the Mets to the World Series in a 7-0 win over the Cardinals. Todd Zeile drives in three runs in support. Hampton is named NLCS MVP for his 16 scoreless innings over his two starts.
