Justin Verlander threw 100 pitches to get through five scoreless innings, allowing five hits and two walks with five strikeouts, but Drew Smith surrendered a go-ahead two-run homer to Joey Wiemer as the Mets fell to the Brewers 2-1 on Monday. With the loss, the Mets fall to 6-16 in June and are a season-worst eight games under .500.

The Mets and Brewers continue their series at Citi Field tonight, with David Peterson (1-6, 8.08 ERA) taking the hill against Julio Teheran (2-2, 1.53 ERA). Peterson hasn’t started in the majors since he allowed six runs and nine hits in five innings against the Nationals on May 15. The lefty faced the Brewers back on April 5, allowing five runs on five hits with five walks in four innings. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m.

The Mets optioned left-hander Josh Walker to the minors and called up another southpaw, T.J. McFarland. Walker owned a strong 1.59 ERA through his first five big league appearances but recorded just one out, walking three and getting charged with four earned runs over his last two outings. The journeyman McFarland, meanwhile, has pitched to a solid 2.76 ERA with 37 strikeouts in 32 2/3 appearances for Triple-A Syracuse. In addition, the Mets reinstated Smith from his 10-game suspension.

Kiley McDaniel of ESPN related his updated mock draft, in which he projects the Mets to take right-handed pitcher Josh Knoth out of Patchogue-Medford High School on Long Island. The 6-foot-1 righty has a fastball that can touch 96 miles per hour and a power curve that generates 3,100 revolutions per minute.

Right-hander Mike Vasil will be the Mets’ lone representative in the 2023 All-Star Futures Game. Vasil has 66 strikeouts against 13 walks in 57 2/3 innings between Double-A and Triple-A this season.

Right-hander Luis Moreno has been named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week. Moreno tossed five no-hit innings for Double-A Binghamton on June 20.

Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports that the Rangers have expressed interest in Andrew McCutchen, though the Pirates aren’t ready to move him yet. The former MVP has hit a solid .271/.394/.431 (127 OPS+) with nine homers in 277 plate appearances this season.

Major League Baseball announced that over 1.5 million fans attended games for the second straight weekend. It’s the league has averaged 35,000 fans per game over consecutive weekends since 2015, it’s the first time they’ve had four weekends of at least 1.5 million fans since 2017.

The Angels have placed Eduardo Escobar on the restricted list while he’s in Florida to take his American citizenship test. He could return to the team on Wednesday.

1992: Howard Johnson hits a walk-off homer as the Mets edge the Cardinals, 2-1.

2008: In the first of a day-night, two-stadium doubleheader, Carlos Delgado drives in a franchise-record nine runs as the Mets trounce the Yankees, 15-6. Delgado gets his RBI total started with a two-run double in the fifth inning, then smacks a towering grand slam in the sixth inning. He caps off his afternoon with a three-run homer in the eighth inning. Carlos Beltrán also chips in a homer, and Luis Castillo scores five runs.

2012: Daniel Murphy hits a solo homer and a two-run homer for his first two homers of the year, Ike Davis hits a three-run homer, and Scott Hairston hits a grand slam as the Mets rout the Cubs, 17-1. David Wright drives in five runs, and Jon Niese earns the win seven solid innings.
