The New York Mets fell short yet again this week, losing two out of three on the road to both the Houston Astros and Philadelphia Phillies. Despite the team’s poor performance, Francisco Lindor and Max Scherzer both proved their star status and impressed when the rest of the roster couldn’t.

Hitter of the Week

After seeing his OPS drop to .700 last week, Francisco Lindor came back with a vengeance and displayed signs of turning his season around.

In Monday’s 11-1 blowout win over the Astros, Lindor went 2-for-5 with five RBIs on two extra-base hits, including a three-run home run off of Hunter Brown. In Wednesday’s game, Lindor tallied a double and sacrifice fly against Cristian Javier while also recording three walks in the process.

In Friday’s bout with the Phillies, Lindor got on-base twice by way of a single and a walk. He came through with a two-hit performance on Saturday before mashing his second homer of the week off of Zack Wheeler on Sunday afternoon.

Lindor finished the week with a slash line of .333/.444/.714 to go with two home runs and seven RBIs.

Pitcher of the Week

In a pitching staff defined by underperformance and inconsistency, Max Scherzer has stood out as one of the few bright spots in recent weeks.

Scherzer’s first start of the week came on Monday against the Astros. After struggling mightily in his previous outing against the Yankees, Scherzer stood his ground and mowed through Houston’s lineup, pitching eight innings of one-run ball with eight strikeouts while giving up just four hits and one walk.

Scherzer’s second start came against the Phillies on Saturday, where he threw six innings while giving up just two runs and recording eight strikeouts on the way to back-to-back winning decisions.

In total this week, Scherzer threw 14 innings and finished with an ERA of 1.93 over his two outings to go with 16 strikeouts.
