The Mets lost both games of the doubleheader Wednesday to the Tigers. In the first game, the Mets had a 5-4 lead going into the eighth inning but ultimately lost the lead in a 6-5 defeat. Chris Bello has a more complete recap of the first game. In the second game, Max Scherzer had a rough day at the office, allowing six earned runs in 3 1/3 innings pitched. Tim Healey of Newsday Sports reports that Carlos Carrasco will make a rehab start Friday or Saturday. The Mets’ plan is for him to rejoin the rotation next week. He isn’t a candidate to start Sunday. The Mets will need someone for that spot. Abbey Mastracco of the New York Daily News reports that the Mets are probably going to use Joey Lucchesi on short rest Sunday, which is why they pulled him early from the game one.

Evan Drellich of The Athletic reports that MLB and the MLBPA are very close to finalizing the 2022-26 major league CBA. They have moved on to proof-reading and tweaking hard-copy versions and other minor things. He also reported that MLB’s $185 million payout to minor league players is on hold for now. The Seattle Mariners report that LHP Robbie Ray had surgery on his left elbow. Dr. Keith Meister performed a flexor tendon repair and reconstructed the Ulnar Collateral Ligament (UCL) in Ray’s left arm.

Roch Kubatko of MASN reports that Matt Chapman (AL) and Ronald Acuña Jr. (NL) were the players of the month in their respective leagues. Additionally, Gerrit Cole (AL) and Clayton Kershaw (NL) were the pitchers of the month in their respective leagues. Also, Josh Jung (AL) and James Outman (LAD) were the rookies of the month. Finally, the relievers of the month were Félix Bautista (AL) and Josh Hader (NL).

Kyle Glaser of Baseball America reports that MLB is testing an “enhanced grip” ball in the Double-A Southern League this year. One month in, strikeouts, walks and wild pitches are up, batting averages are down, hitters and managers are frustrated and pitchers are generating huge amounts of carry.

Sam Blum of The Athletic reports that José Quijada will need Tommy John surgery, Phil Nevin said. He’ll miss the rest of the season, but they hope he’ll return at some point next year.

Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports that Cleveland Guardians pitching prospect Daniel Espino underwent right shoulder surgery (anterior capsule repair) and is expected to miss 12-14 months. Espino is widely considered one of the league’s top pitching prospects but he has not pitched since April 2022.

Kylie McDaniel of ESPN wrote about the top 160 prospects ahead of the 2023 MLB draft.

Patrick Mooney of The Athletic reports that the Cubs traded catcher Luis Torrens to the Orioles for a cash consideration.
