As expected, the Mets have demoted rookie right-hander Rafael Montero to Triple-A Las Vegas to clear the roster spot for reliever Buddy Carlyle who was promoted after last night’s game. Montero lasted just 3.2 innings in Friday’s 14-inning loss to the Phillies.
Mets asst GM John Ricco said Montero’s demotion was solely out of necessity because the bullpen is shot.
Daisuke Matsuzaka will likely get the spot start on Wednesday in Chicago against the Cubs and remain in the rotation until Dillon Gee returns from the disabled list.
Montero posted a 5.40 ERA and 1.60 WHIP in four starts while with the Mets and got tagged for five home runs.

The Mets announced that 36-year-old reliever Buddy Carlyle will be promoted from Las Vegas and join the team in time for Saturday’s game.
A corresponding move has not yet been announced, but a few beat writers believe it could be Rafael Montero.
The move was necessitated after the bullpen logged 9.1 innings in Friday’s 6-5 loss to the Phillies in 14 innings.
Carlyle is 1-1 with a 1.27 ERA and one save in 21.1 innings with Las Vegas spanning 18 relief appearances.
He has appeared in the majors during parts of seven seasons, with the Padres, Dodgers, Braves and Yankees.
In 118 MLB appearances, Carlyle owns a 5.58 ERA and 1.45 WHIP in 253.1 innings pitched.
