The Mets opener against the Reds Tuesday was one to forget as New York lost 14-4. The positive note for the Amazin’s would be Dominic Smith collecting two hits. On the “needs improvement” side, starting pitcher Chris Flexen allowed seven runs while Chasen Bradford allowed six runs, four earned in his relief appearance. Also Terry double switched out Amed Rosario even though this point in the season is not to win but to get time for young bats and arms.

Rafael Montero is 2-9 on the season over 27 games and 12 starts through 83.0 innings while posting a 5.64 ERA, 4.37 FIP and 1.759 WHIP. His last time out was in relief against the Nationals where he allowed two runs over 0.1 innings and two hits. His previous three starts he logged 17.1 innings allowing only six runs on 18 hits and seven walks leading to a 3.12 ERA. The Reds have the following numbers against Montero:

Homer Bailey left his last start due to pain his right shoulder but he’s going to pitch tonight! He is 4-6 over 12 games and 56.1 innings this season posting a 7.99 ERA, 5.54 FIP and 1.970 WHIP. When he was taken out of his last game early, he was on track to do well allowing no runs and one hit over three innings. If you look at all of his starts, he is either great or terrible, there is only one start of the 12 that is average. The only Mets who have seen him in a game are Cabrera who is 3-9 with two walks and Reyes who is 1-for-5.
NOTES:
The Mets had their franchise-record 14-game winning streak vs. Cincinnati snapped last night. It was one shy of the club’s all-time winning streak vs. one team. New York had 15 straight wins vs. Pittsburgh (June 6, 1986-April 9, 1987).
The Mets average age is 27.2, the fourth youngest in the majors according to ESPN.com. Only Jerry Blevins and Jacob deGrom have been active the entire year without being sent to the minors or placed on the DL.
Asdrubal Cabrera has six RBI in his last five games. Cabrera is batting .375 (6-for-16) with four runs scored and three
doubles during that span.
Jose Reyes is 9-for-his-last-17 (.529) with a .619 OBP dating to August 13. He has seven seasons of 20 or more doubles with the Mets, tied with Mike Piazza for the second-most in franchise history. David Wright has 10 such seasons. He made his first career start in the outfield last night.
