The Mets lost again yesterday capping one of the worst months in the team’s history. Anthony DiComo reported yesterday that the Mets 5-21 record (.192) ranks just behind August 1982 (.172) and July 1963 (.138). Rosario was the only player to reach base twice yesterday going 1-2 at the plate and getting a walk. At least Swarzak didn’t allow any runs in relief.

The Mets will try to get things back together with Steven Matz. Matz is 3-5 over 15 games and 78 innings with a 3.69 ERA, 4.89 FIP, 1.244 WHIP and a 103 ERA+. He is coming off an average-good start where he allowed three runs over seven innings from six hits and no walks. He hasn’t faced the Marlins yet this season but last year he shut them out over seven innings in Miami. The Marlins have the following numbers against Matz:

Dan Straily is probably pitching against the Mets today despite throwing at a batter and getting suspended for 5 games. He is 3-3 over 11 games and 52.1 innings with a 4.82 ERA, 6.02 FIP, 1.395 WHIP and a 77 ERA+. His last start was average, allowing three runs over 6.1 innings from four hits. In the start before that, he allowed four runs over 1.1 innings. Overall in his last four starts he has allowed 14 runs in 16.1 innings (a 7.71 ERA). One of his last good starts was against the Mets where he allowed one run over six innings. The Mets have the following numbers against Dan:

Jose Bautista has a .438 OBP since joining the Mets on May 22. He has reached base safely in each of his last 15 games dating to June 15 (.466 OBP in that time). He also has three homers and six RBI over his last eight contests. Bautista is hitting .343 (12-35) with five doubles, three homers, 10 RBI and 11 runs scored over his last 13 games. He has drawn 15 base-on-balls in his last 15 games and 24 walks in 35 games with the Mets since May 22.
