The New York Mets are planning on using an opener for the second game of tonight’s double-header.

The starter for the second game tonight is Miguel Castro, who was originally scheduled to be the opener for last night’s game when Jacob deGrom got scratched.

Miguel Castro has pitched in 10 games this year throwing 10 innings with a 3.60 ERA, 1.71 FIP, 1.300 WHIP and a 112 ERA+. All of those are better than his career numbers for those categories. He got roughed up in his last outing against the Phillies, allowing three runs, two earned, which raised his ERA from a 2.00 to a 3.60.

I think there’s also a good chance we see Jordan Yamamoto make his Mets debut in this game.

Yamamoto was signed as pitching depth for the Mets and was originally supposed to pitch the Opening game for the Syracuse Mets yesterday. He struggled last year, allowing 24 runs in 11.1 innings. In 2019 he tossed 78.2 innings with a 4.46 ERA, 4.51 FIP, 1.144 WHIP and a 4.51 FIP. He’s also a fun follow on Twitter!

The Mets bats will get a look at Johan Oviedo tonight. The young righty had a great first game, where he pitched 4.2 innings allowing two hits and nothing else against the Brewers. In his start against the Phillies he allowed three runs from three hits, while striking out seven.

He made his major league debut last year and pitched in 24.2 innings over five games with a 5.47 ERA, 5.30 FIP, 1.378 WHIP and a 78 ERA+. There is no one the Mets roster who has seen Oviedo in a major league game.

Game Notes

  • For the first time this season, Francisco Lindor will not be in the starting lineup, as the Mets look to give their shortstop a rest after a rough first game today. Lindor went 0-for-3 and was not his usual self at shortstop, making a few costly mistakes including a throwing error which led to two unearned runs.
  • Brandon Nimmo is heading to the IL with his lingering finger injury.
  • Patrick Mazeika has been called up in Nimmo’s place, giving the Mets a third catcher and another left-handed bat off the bench.
  • Former Mets prospect Ali Sanchez will make the start for St. Louis. Sanchez is making his season debut tonight.
