Following Game 1 of Wednesday’s doubleheader with the St. Louis Cardinals, the New York Mets placed outfielder Brandon Nimmo on the 10-day injured list with a left finger bone bruise.

The Mets will replace Nimmo on the active roster with catcher Patrick Mazeika.

Nimmo tested the finger before the first game earlier today, and according to manager Luis Rojas, he was still experiencing pain when swinging the bat, which resulted in the move to IL him.

Nimmo has not started a game since injuring the finger on a swing in Saturday night’s victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on May 1, which afterwards he described, as his finger feeling like it “exploded.”

With Nimmo out, Kevin Pillar has stepped up handling the majority of the center field duties in his absence. Pillar has gone 6-for-12 with two home runs and three RBIs since Nimmo went down.

The hope is, that with proper rest, Nimmo can come back when he is eligible for activation at the 10 day mark, retroactive to May 3.

But in the meantime, Pillar will likely continue to receive the bulk of the playing time until Nimmo returns. And in the lineup, Jeff McNeil has taken his spot as the leadoff hitter.

Nimmo has been one of the Mets’ most productive hitters this season slashing .318/.430/.439 with a home run and eight RBIs. But in his last seven games, Nimmo was in a 1-for-17 stretch at the plate with eight strikeouts.
