The Mets and Marlins compete the teams’ four-game set this Sunday with a fantastic pitching matchup. Taijuan Walker, who has been on fire for the last month or so faces off against one of the best pitchers in baseball right now, Sandy Alcántara.

Taijuan Walker has made 14 starts, tossing 78 2/3rd innings this season with a 2.86 ERA, 3.09 FIP, 1.144 WHIP and a 140 ERA+. Since May 22nd, he has made nine starts and tossed 55 2/3rd innings with a 2.59 ERA and 2.67 FIP. In his last five starts he has pitched 32 innings with a 2.25 ERA, 2.01 FIP and 36 strikeouts.
This stretch includes back-to-back starts against the Marlins where he allowed four runs over 12 2/3rd innings via 10 hits and three walks. He also struck out 14 batters over this time. The Marlins have the following numbers against him:

Sandy Alcántara has made 17 starts and pitched a league-leading 123 1/3rd innings this year with a 1.82 ERA, 2.85 FIP, 0.908 WHIP and a 227 ERA+. He is coming off of a dominating start against the Angels where he didn’t allow a run and only let up two hits while striking out 10.
He’s made two starts against the Mets this season. In the first start, New York was able to score two runs via six hits and a walk over eight innings. In the second start, the Mets made him look human. New York scored five runs, four of which were earned, over seven innings courtesy of six hits. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

Games Notes
Per Deesha of NY Daily News, James McCann (oblique) is going on the injured list. He is expected to be out for longer than 10 days. There has been no decision made on Starling Marte (groin) yet. Patrick Mazeika is with the team.
On the SNY broadcast, Gary Cohen explained that Jeff McNeil is not expected to join the Mets on their trip to Atlanta. He and his wife, Tatiana, are expecting the birth of their child.
After yesterday’s 10-inning victory, the Mets are the only team in the majors who have yet to drop an extra-inning contest this season.
Last season, Taijuan Walker tied a career-high with four pickoffs, tied for the fifth-most in the majors and the most among right-handed pitchers that year. This season, Walker is tied for the major league-lead with three pickoffs. This is very important given the Marlins’ ability to steal bases this season.
