The suddenly hot New York Mets (28-29) defeated the Philadelphia Phillies (24-31) by a score of 11-2 this evening in Citizens Bank Park. Bartolo Colon squared off against Roberto Hernandez in the final game of a five game series, four of which the Mets won!

What you should know:

The Mets got off to an early lead in the second inning, with Bobby Abreu scoring on a double hit by Lucas Duda.

Fast forward to the sixth inning, where the Mets broke the game open, as David Wright doubled to score Matt den Dekker, followed by a Wilmer Flores double to score David Wright and Bobby Abreu.

Roberto Hernandez would pitch 5 and 1/3rd’s innings for Philadelphia, striking out five, allowing five runs.

Bartolo Colon was effective for the Mets again, pitching seven innings, and holding the Phillies to two runs and striking out five.

The Phillies two runs came in the sixth inning, with Ryan Howard grounding out to score a run, and a Jeurys Familia wild pitch.

The Mets scored another six runs in the top of the ninth, with Curtis Granderson singling in two runs, and Wilmer Flores hitting his first career grand slam to top off the hitting clinic. Six RBIs for Flores in the game.

Matt den Dekker had the defensive play of the game when he robbed Ryan Howard of a home run with a tremendous leaping grab in the second inning.

The Mets are now within one game of .500 again!

Thoughts:

Wow! What a series this weekend in Philadelphia, as the Mets took four out of five from one of their biggest rivals. They are now one game of .500 and are playing extremely well since Lamar Johnson became the hitting coach. Let’s hope the Amazin’s can keep this up!
