The Mets (83-63) were defeated by the Miami Marlins (63-83) by a score of 6-0 tonight at Citi Field.

Pitching:

Bartolo Colon, who came into tonight’s game sporting a 4-0 record and 2.13 ERA in his last seven starts, looked to capitalize on his recent success and take the rubber game from the Marlins.

Colon didn’t have his best stuff by any means, and this was made clear when he let up solo shots to Martin Prado and J.T. Realmuto in fourth and fifth innings respectively.

Later in the fifth Donovan Solano doubled, and tried to come around after Colon’s opposition Adam Conley singled up the middle.

Juan Lagares then came up with the ball firing and gunned down Solano at the plate, in vintage Lagares form.

In the sixth inning, Dee Gordon hit a ground-rule double to center field and after advancing to third, would score on a sacrifice fly from Justin Bour.

Colon was removed after 73 pitches and 5.2 innings, as Terry Collins decided to go to the bullpen to not let the game get out of hand.

Hansel Robles relieved Colon, and walked the first batter he faced to load the bases. However, he struck out Ichiro Suzuki to end the frame.

Tyler Clippard allowed another run in the eighth inning, as he let up a home run to Justin Bour to give Miami a 4-0 lead. As great as Clippard has been, his home rate as of late has been alarming. It’s something to keep an eye on, although I hope it’s just a minor blip.

In the ninth inning, Erik Goeddel and Sean Gilmartin gave up two more runs to extend the Marlins lead to 6-0.

Offense:

Well, with the Mets being shutout, there is no offense to really speak of. Marlins starter, Adam Conley, stymied the Mets’ hitters over seven strong innings. He struck out six batters and allowed only three hits.

The Mets best scoring opportunity perhaps came in the eighth inning, as two batters walked with David Wright coming to the plate. Wright had a chance to do some damage, but grounded out to short to end the inning after a pitching change.

I really can’t complain too much about Terry Collins’ managing considering the Mets are in first place, but I still disagree with him throwing a new lineup out everyday.

In addition, I just don’t understand why Juan Uribe was batting cleanup and Yoenis Cespedes batting third. But hey, I’m just a journalist.

On deck:

The Mets are off tomorrow, but take on the Yankees for a three game weekend series starting Friday. Steven Matz (3-0, 1.88 ERA) takes on Masahiro Tanaka (12-6, 3.40 ERA) for the opener. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM.
