Cespedes Yoenis

Ken Davidoff of the New York Post spoke with Yoenis Cespedes at the offices of his representatives at Roc Nation and discussed his time and potential future with the Mets.

As far as how he’s enjoyed his time in New York so far and the reception he’s received from fans, Cespedes said:

“I’m very happy here. This has been the most complete team that I’ve been a part of. So I’m definitely really happy to stay here. I feel really good about being here.”

Regarding the Mets themselves and his teammates, Cespedes said:

“It’s been the best month I’ve had in the last four years of my career. Because of the results that I’ve had, and because currently, I’m in the playoffs.”

Cespedes also admitted to Davidoff that it was he who asked his agent to get rid of the clause in his contract that limited the Mets to just five days to sign him.

“It only gave me five days for the Mets to sign me after the World Series, so I wanted it changed so that it’s not just within those five days. So even during the offseason, they can sign me if that’s what they want.”

It’s quite apparent to me, that whether or not Cespedes returns to the Mets after this season is clearly on the shoulders of the Wilpons.

Cespedes has said and done everything to show he loves this team, loves its fans, and loves the city. He’s done that both in words and in deeds.

In an article by Tim Rohan of the New York Times, Ariel Prieto, Cespedes’s interpreter in Oakland said:

“A team like the Mets, if they give him a good offer, he’s going to stay,” Prieto said . “He wants to compete; that’s what’s most important to this kid. He wants to be a part of that. That’s why he’s doing good over there, because he knows they have a good chance to go to the playoffs or even go all the way through.”

In 42 games with the Mets, Cespedes is hitting .302 with 17 home runs, 42 RBI and a 1.226 OPS.

For an excellent analysis of why signing Yoenis Cespedes is a risk the Mets have to take, I encourage you to read this article by my colleague Matt Balasis.
