Pitching
Noah Syndergaard took the mound for the Mets. He gave up two ground ball singles in the first inning but got a ground ball to first base from Eric Hosmer. Pete Alonso made the throw to second and Amed Rosario made a decent throw back but Syndergaard overran the base and missed the ball. The result was an unearned run for the Padres.
In the second, Ty France was caught by Michael Conforto trying to stretch a single into a double. That helped Syndergaard pitch a quick inning.
In the third, Syndergaard gave up a two-out homer to Franmil Reyes to tie the game at two. In the fourth, Syndergaard gave up a two-run homer Ty France after giving up a double to Hunter Renfroe. He pitched a 1-2-3 fifth inning though and had a chance at the sixth inning.
He gave up a double to Hosmer to lead off the sixth followed by a RBI single to Renfroe. Noah got France to fly out but walked Wil Myers. He managed to escape though by striking out Francisco Mejia and getting Alex Dickerson to fly out. His final line was: 6 IP, 9 H, 5 R (4 ER), BB, 5 K.
Seth Lugo pitched the seventh inning. He gave up a leadoff single to Ian Kinsler but then got Reyes to hit into a double-play and got Manny Machado to ground out. Lugo pitched a scoreless eighth too, adding in a couple of strikeouts.
With his first lead in many days, Edwin Diaz got into a huge jam in the ninth, loading the bases with Hunter Renfroe at the plate. But Diaz struck him out looking to end the game and secure a Mets victory.

Offense
Well it certainly looks like the Mets offense is back. Jeff McNeil doubled to lead off the first inning. He then got singled in by Amed Rosario. Robinson Cano hit a ground-rule double for his 2,500th career hit. Rosario was then driven in by Pete Alonso to give them an early 2-0 lead.
The Mets had some chances in between the first and seventh innings but could not cash anything in. For example, they had a bases loaded and two-out threat thanks to a Cano double and walks from Michael Conforto and Brandon Nimmo.
The seventh is when things got interesting though. The Mets were down 5-2 to begin the seventh inning. Jeff McNeil walked to lead things off and Rosario doubled to make it second and third, no-out. Robinson Cano struck out but Alonso singled to make it 5-3. Conforto followed it up to make it 5-4 on a sac-fly. Wilson Ramos to extend the inning. With two men on, Brandon Nimmo came up with a much needed double to tie up the game.
In the ninth inning, Robinson Cano got his fourth hit of the night with an infield single. With the Mets needing a big moment and big hit, Pete Alonso hit one into the second deck of left field. The Mets, losers of four in a row, needed a huge hit from their rookie and he gave them.
It was Alonso before the game who told teammates, “this was a must win game.” Alonso backed that up and won this game with a big blast.
