According to Jeff Pasan of ESPN, the Blue Jays have signed pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu to a four-year $80 million dollar contract.

Ryu entered free agency as one of the best pitchers on the market after an excellent 2019 campaign. He went 14-5 with a 2.32 ERA and 1.00 WHIP. Ryu also posted a 1.97 ERA and 1.00 WHIP in 82 innings in 2018.

Many expected Ryu to win the NL Cy Young after an incredible start to the season. Ryu held a 1.53 ERA on July 31, but he posted a 4.60 ERA in August and September. Ryu finished second in the Cy Young voting to the Mets’ Jacob deGrom.

Earlier on Sunday, Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic reported that the Blue Jays were looking to upgrade their pitching staff and were intersted in trading for David Price of the Red Sox

Toronto ranked 21st in the MLB with a 4.79 ERA this season. They also dealt their opening day starter, Marcus Stroman, to the Mets at the trading deadline, so the Blue Jays hope that 32-year-old Ryu will help reinforce their 2020 staff.
