As Major League Baseball gets ready for the impending lockout, there was a flurry of late night deals made on Monday in the pitching market. These are particularly important to note because the Mets are still expected to sign another starting pitcher and add a couple of bullpen arms.

Alex Cobb to the Giants

The Giants announced their deal with Cobb on Monday night, he’s the third starting pitcher (Alex Wood and Anthony DeScalafini) they’ve signed this offseason. Cobb is getting a two-year deal worth $20 million that also has an option for a third season.

Cobb had been identified earlier in the offseason a potential bargain signing, and he goes to a team that has been recently tremendous at getting the most out of starting pitchers. The right-hander had a 3.76 ERA and 2.92 FIP in 18 starts for the Angels in 2021. He was also in the 94th percentile of avoiding barreled contact, 93rd percentile in getting hitters to chase, and the defense behind him this season was -4 outs above average. All three could point to a steal of a contract for the Giants.

Red Sox Take Chance on James Paxton

The left-hander has made a grand total of six starts over the last two seasons and is coming off of Tommy John surgery in April of this year. It’s reportedly a one year, $10 million deal with a two-year club option.

The Red Sox are certainly hoping to get a glimpse of the James Paxton that had a 3.54 ERA over 447 innings between 2017-19 while striking out 30.1% of batters faced and while walking only 7.3%.

The Red Sox lost lefty starter Eduardo Rodriguez to the Tigers very early on in free agency.

Angels Re-Sign Raisel Iglesias

Arguably the best reliever on the free agent market has decided to stay in Los Angeles after signing a four-year, $58 million deal with the Angels. The right-hander had 34 saves and a 2.57 ERA in 70 innings for the Angels in 2021.

The fantastic season for Iglesias also included 103 strikeouts and a career-best 2.8 WAR. The former Reds closer has 134 saves and a 157 ERA+ since the start of the 2017 season.

The Angels already added pitchers Noah Syndergaard, Aaron Loup, and Michael Lorenzen to their pitching staff earlier in the offseason.
