New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on Thursday that fans will be allowed back in attendance at indoor and outdoor venues, albeit at a limited capacity, starting on April 1.

This bodes well for fans of the New York Mets and New York Yankees, who will be able to have fans in their seats for the first time since the 2019 season.

Indoor venues will be allowed to run at 10 percent capacity, and outdoor arenas or stadiums will be allowed to hold 20 percent capacity. For the Mets, that’s about 8,000 fans and for the Yankees it’s about 10,000.

In order to attend a game, fans will have to furnish proof that they have received the COVID-19 vaccine, or a negative PCR test.

Here are the rest of the guidelines fans will have to follow:

The New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets, New York Islanders, New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils have started to reintroduce fans back into their arenas in the last several weeks, and with the vaccine being rolled out on a wider scale, it seemed inevitable that baseball would follow suit.

For a majority of the 2020 season, baseball among other sports played to empty stadiums, though a limited amount of fans were allowed to attend the World Series.

Former Mets’ pitcher Al Leiter said the feeling of letting fans attend games again was similar to that of Sept. 11.

“There’s a similar feeling now, but it will be great to have fans again, Leiter said, according to Joseph Spector of Gannett Albany. “There’s no better place to play than New York.”

Mets’ first baseman Pete Alonso said last month that he can’t wait to have fans back in attendance.

“Having fans in the stands, there’s nothing like it. There’s really nothing like it,” Alonso said. “Being there in person, you can make that many people smile, stand, clap, cheer, just by doing something. That’s really special.”

Mets’ manager Luis Rojas seconded that notion on Thursday, saying it will be a huge boost to have that atmosphere present at Citi Field this year.

“It’s going to be outstanding to hear that support,” Rojas said. “It’s going to mean a lot to everybody.”

The Mets will host their first home game of the season on April 8 against the Miami Marlins at 1:10 p.m.
