You’ve heard the old saying where there’s smoke, there’s fire?
Well in the last 24 hours there has been a lot of buzz surrounding the Mets potentially trading Jose Reyes. Nothing concrete mind you, but certainly a buzz.
According to Hank Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle, Mets shortstop Jose Reyes is definitely on the market and not only that, but that the Mets are looking for 3-4 players/prospects in return for him.
Schulman, believes that’s a steep price considering Reyes’ $11 million dollar salary and that he’s in his walk year.
This comes less than a day after Sandy Alderson told reporters at Citi Field that he was going to let Jose Reyes play the season out and then he would consider “whether or not he’ll continue to be the shortstop of the future”.
Schulman wrote in another article in the San Francisco Chronicle yesterday, that the Giants are in the market for a shortstop and have their eyes squarely set on Stephen Drew and Jose Reyes,
Another possibility is Jose Reyes, whom the Mets seem willing to trade as they seek payroll relief.

It would be surprising if Jose Reyes gets traded this offseason for a number of reasons: he’s popular and homegrown; there’s no heir apparent; you would be trading low because he’s only signed through 2011; and you’d be trading low because of recent injuries. Still, that should not stop teams from asking, and from the Mets at least asking for the moon in return.
I never could have imagined a day that the Mets would ever consider trading Jose Reyes, but lately I’m starting to think that anything is possible.
