The Mets beat the Yankees for the third straight time in a 9-4 walloping tonight at Yankee Stadium. The win gave the Mets their first four-game winning streak of the season.
The Mets jumped out to an early lead when they sent ten batters to the plate in the first inning and scored five runs; the big blow coming off the bat of Ike Davis, a two run single.
The Mets tacked on another run in the third when Marlon Byrd lifted a solo home run, his fifth, just off the top of the right field wall. The Mets would plate two more runs in the fourth after Lucas Duda stroked his 10th double of the season to drive home two more runs.
Staked to a 5-0 lead, Jeremy Hefner started for the Mets and delivered a solid performance. The young righthander pitched six innings and allowed three runs while scattering nine hits. He walked none and struck out five and finally picked up his first win of the season. Good for him…
The Yankees got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Brennan Boesch tagged Hefner for a long solo home run to make the score 8-1. Thanks to another mental lapse in the field by Tejada, the Yanks plated their second and third runs in the sixth off of Hefner.
Scott Rice relieved Hefner and tossed 1.2 scoreless innings allowing just one hit and striking out three. He has been a revelation in the Mets bullpen. LaTroy Hawkins got the last four outs of the game, but not before allowing an RBI single to Robinson Cano.
Nice win for the Mets who had their largest offensive output since April 12 when they scored 16 runs against the Minnesota Twins.
Notes:
During the broadcast, Gary Cohen announced that Mets brass met with Ike Davis and Ruben Tejada after last night’s game. While no other details were announced, you can probably deduce that they were both issued a final warning. Whatever was said, both players looked better at the plate in this game.
Tejada came out of the game in the ninth inning with an apparent leg injury. We’ll let you know more as soon as we get any information. He was replaced by Justin Turner.

The Mets will go for the sweep of the Subway Series and their fifth straight win tomorrow night at 7:05 pm at Yankee Stadium. Dillon Gee (2-6, 6.39 ERA) will get the nod and oppose rookie southpaw Vidal Nuno.(1-1, 1.93 ERA).
