Mike Moustakas and Bartolo Colon are on completely opposite ends of the current free agent spectrum but both seem unlikely to be New York Mets in 2018 according to comments made by GM Sandy Alderson on Thursday.

Alderson mentioned costs in dollars, draft pick compensation and lack of defensive versatility when asked if the Mets would sign Moustakas.

Moustakas had a career-high 38 home runs in 2017 coupled with 85 RBI. He also hit to a .272/.314/.521 clip with a 114 wRC+ and .345 wOBA across 598 plate appearances.

In the field last year, he spent the entirety of his 1,093.0 innings at third. He had -8 defensive runs saved (DRS) and a -3.1 UZR.

The Mets have shown interest in Todd Frazier, Josh Harrison, Neil Walker and Eduardo Nunez as they look to add an infielder that can play second or third base.

Alderson also said that a deal with Colon was unlikely even on a minor league deal despite the two sides having talked already this offseason.

Colon struggled last season with a 7-14 record to go along with a 6.48 ERA, 1.587 WHIP, 5.21 FIP, and 89 SO in 148 innings between the Atlanta Braves and Minnesota Twins.

The Mets could certainly use starting rotation depth after seeing everyone besides Jacob deGrom get injured, underperform or both in 2017.
