New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said on Thursday that the team could still add a veteran left-handed reliever to complement Jerry Blevins.
The Mets only have two left-handed pitchers on the 40-man roster currently, the previously mentioned Blevins and starter Steven Matz. On Wednesday they traded left-handed reliever Josh Smoker to the Pittsburgh Pirates for left-handed relief prospect Daniel Zamora and cash.
Tony Watson, 32, is the best of what’s left on the market for a LOOGY. He posted a 3.38 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 7.2 K/9 last season in 66.2 combined innings between the Pirates and Dodgers.
Watson he was much better down the stretch with a 2.70 ERA and 1.05 WHIP for the Dodgers in 20 innings after a July trade brought him to LA.
The rest of the relief market includes Fernando Abad, Craig Breslow, Jorge De La Rosa, Ian Krol, Francisco Liriano, Robbie Ross, Kevin Siegrist and former Met Oliver Perez.
Sandy does have a history of waiting out the reliever market scooping up Blevins on Feb. 9 last year.
