We started our countdown of top prospects from 30, grouping prospects in bunches until we hit No. 12. From No. 11 on down, each prospect will receive his own post.

Editor’s Note: This ranking was prior to Matt Allan’s latest elbow injury. If these rankings were redone, his ranking would be closer to No. 30 than 10.

Just two years ago around this time, Matt Allan was a top-100 prospect and was on pace to become a top-50 prospect by Spring Training. Allan underwent Tommy John surgery in 2021 and ulnar nerve transposition surgery in 2022.

Allan still ranked as a top-5 prospect in an albeit weaker Mets system after the 2021 season according to Baseball America. The second straight missed season was why some folks are starting to have their thoughts about Allan as a prospect. Despite his tools when being drafted, 10.1 IP as a professional and 0 since 2019 have made him a massive question mark.

As this list is being published, Allan underwent UCL reconstruction surgery and will miss his third straight season (fourth if you count the pandemic season). Allan will likely miss a good chunk of 2024 as well and I think it is fair to say that any lingering expectations from 2019 have pretty much ended.

Allan slid to 20th on Keith Law’s latest ranking (presumably updated post the latest surgery) and mentioned that Allan’s fastball velocity was back up to the mid-90s before the surgery.

Pre-injury, Allan’s secondary makeup was well above average. Law mentioned that his curveball was a 60 on the 20-80 scale and back in his 2021 ranking, he mentioned his changeup “had left-handed batters in Mets camp raving.”

At this point, I think the Mets will move him to the bullpen if and when he’s finally healthy. He will be a fun guy to root for as he’s been through a lot but he will likely be a lot lower on the rankings going forward.
