Recap:

The ink on his contract has dried, his Rangers jersey is packed away, but Jon Niese was not smiling tonight. He had a few good pitches, but the Blue Jays were just absolutely dominant tonight. Niese’s Achilles heel has always been the long ball, and the Jays had that going for them. Niese allowed a career high four homeruns in the first three innings and two came from the same guy. Three innings, eight runs on eight hits, two walks and striking out six. The strikeouts are nice at least. Shake it off Jonny. He’s now 2-2 on the season.

It didn’t matter who the Mets threw out there against the Jays, they were just tee-ing off everyone. Acosta and Ramirez combine for three innings, four hits and six runs. Four walks, four strikeouts, and a homerun to Acosta. Rob Carson made his major league debut and had a hitless inning with a walk.

Now pitching for the Mets, the catcher, Rob Johnson. Last position play to pitch for the Mets was Todd Zeile in ’04, also in Canada. He gets two quick pop ups, started throwing changeups, cutters, sliders, and finally an 87 MPH fastball for the strikeout. Putting Niese and the bullpen to shame.

Mets were able to put together five runs on just four hits tonight. Thankfully the Mets resigned Hairston, or it would be even less. Two hits on the night for the big guy, a double and a three-run bomb.

Wright with a double before getting taken out. Wright has been feeling ill and will have tomorrow off. His first-inning double gave him 1,300 career hits, tying him with Jose Reyes for second on the franchise’s all-time list. Ed Kranepool ranks first with 1,418 hits, although it took Kranepool 18 seasons as a Met to amass that total.

Murphy 1-3 with a run and an RBI. Batting .331 on the season.

Andres Torres continues to “walk this way” as he draws three more walks today and scores a run.

Lucas Duda and Kirk Niewenhuis combine for 0-7 with five strikeouts. Duda was the DH. This is why we play in the NL.

Notes

Matt Harvey had eleven strikeouts (personal high for the season) in six innings tonight for Buffalo.

Justin Verlander was two outs from no hitting the Pirates. Mets have 8,007 no hitters. Oh sorry, make that 8,007 games with NO no-hitters. My bad. That was Verlander’s first career one-hitter. Some thing the Mets are familiar with (Seaver, Niese, Dickey, etc.).

Game Ball

Scott Hairston. Simple enough.
